Doctoral Lecture Recital
University of British Columbia
Vancouver, Canada
20 April 2007
The following is a live performance of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Suite for Viola and Piano. I was very honoured to be able to have the very fine Canadian pianist, Dr. Rachel Iwaasa as my partner for this fabulous work. I was also delighted that she loved the work as much as I do.
In track no. 1, you will hear the lecture that I made on my doctoral thesis: “From Manuscript to publication: aspects of Lionel Tertis’ Style of Viola Playing as reflected in his 1936 edition of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Suite for Viola and Orchestra (piano).”The thesis deals with the changes that were made between the manuscript, held at the British Library and the publication by Oxford University Press of Tertis’ 1936 edition of the work. The changes made reflect aspects of Tertis’ own personal style of viola playing; a bigger sound in passages of louder dynamic – one that projects well and a broader, more lyrical style in passages of a cantabile nature. I also discuss parts of the history behind the two men and the musical relationship between the two.
