No Rain Again This Spring
in the Sierra Tarahumara
After Eight Years of Drought, Tarahumara Continues to Face Desperate Situation We will need food relief transports for the next four-five years, at least. If you live in the southwestern US just take a look out of your window or pick up the local newspaper and see the obvious signs of a region devastated by drought. Even the national parks and forests are facing complete closure due to drought conditions causing fire dangers. During their most recent dance tours, the Tarahumara's raised significant funds to help purchase a major food delivery this July, August and October in anticipation of a possible crisis like this. Our goal will be to buy many tons of food as possible at this time to provide the additional help needed also seed corn that is appropriate to the high Sierra Madre climate and distribute it throughout the areas most affected during the last years. We plan to begin collecting a goal of 10 tons of fertile seed and distribute it in July, August and October to the hardest hit villages. So much seed given to the Tarahumara is infertile or will not grow in the high altitude climate. Due to these technical details this will be a major project that will require focus and a strong commitment to detail. We are also preparing our spring Tarahumara dance tour to come to Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah in March. We hope you will be considering sponsoring this tour as it is the one chance in which these Tarahumara people get to actually earn and share with us. Again, thank you for your continued support. Send tax deductible donations to: Tarahumara Dance Group to Tour USASpring 2003The Tarahumara Dance Group has again been invited to the United States to perform again in March 2003. We really need SPONSORS. Past tours provided a great success in being able to purchase food. There was also an excellent response from some of our new sponsors in Pheonix, Prescott, Sodona and Tucson. The public really showed enthusiasm for the program so we hope to do it again next year. We are looking for sponsors again in Phoenix, Prescott, Sodona, Tucson and Silver City. If you have any ideas about potential sponsors, please contact us as soon as possible. Prior planning is critical to the success of this project. We also can arrange additional dates during this time period if the host can help with travel expenses. We look forward to seeing you again in March/April 2000! For additional information call (520) 882-5341 or e-mail us!
