Our flight over the Tara River Canyon in Montenegro September 2005
Tane and Richard were flying over the beginning of the canyon, about 20 miles south-east from Durmitor mountain (the tallest in Montenegro). After that we flew over the deepest places of the canyon, some ten miles north-east and north from town Zabljak. We also flew over the beginning and all over the canyon of river Susica (the photo with the peak of Durmitor and a Skrcko lakes).

The canyon is under UNESCO protection as a world`s heritage site.
- * It is the biggest in Europe
- * The canyon can be crossed only by rafts.
- * Except two villages, one at the beginning and other at the center part, the canyon is completely free of signs of civilization.
- * It is by raft 55 miles long.
- * Average depth is 3300 feet.
- * Depth at the deepest place is 5000 feet.
- * Almost every species of Europe's fauna can be found in the canyon. There are, for example, more than 150 species of birds.
- * Fauna of the canyon is even more rich, with thousands different plants.
- * The Tara river is absolutely pure.
- * At the lower part of canyon there are many rapids of 3 and 4 category of difficulty. That part of river is very interesting for kayaking and rafting. That is the reason why it is visited by thousands of tourists every year.
